Where SCDC Releases Go

The South Carolina Department of Corrections operates the statewide prison system. It is not the Lexington County jail. SCDC has no active institution listed in Lexington County, yet a person sentenced in Lexington County may serve time at any institution assigned by SCDC. The county value in the state Released Inmate Search identifies the record's county classification. It does not name the prison gate or prove that the person left Lexington County Detention Center.

An SCDC departure can be a max-out release, parole, probation, supervised reentry, or another administrative status. The exact wording matters. A result marked PROBATION or SUPV RE-ENTRY confirms that prison custody ended while a legal status continued in the community. A result marked RELEASED still should be checked against SCDPPPS and the sentence record before anyone calls it an unconditional discharge.

Confirm Lexington SCDC Releases

SCDC maintains two public tools with different roles. The ordinary current inmate search covers people incarcerated in SCDC as of the prior midnight. It expressly leaves out released people, county-jail detainees, people on community supervision, and current fugitives. The Released Inmate Search is the correct first view after an actual state-prison departure.

The form's county selector and release dates confirm why it is an event search, not an unrestricted name-only inmate locator.

1. Enter a beginning and ending release date in the SCDC Released Inmate Search.
2. Select LEXINGTON as the county and use the optional sex-offender filter only when it fits the record sought.
3. Scan or export the results, then match the legal name and SCDC ID rather than relying on name alone.
4. Read Release Date and Release Type exactly as returned. Do not rewrite a supervised status as a full discharge.
5. Check SCDPPPS when the release type signals parole, probation, supervised reentry, or community supervision.

If the date range is unknown, use the court sentence and SCDC ID to narrow it. An individual records request is safer than claiming a person was not released after a short or guessed date search. SCDC Release Record Contacts

The public release list should come first for an observed departure. Sentence questions go to the SCDC Inmate Records Office. A focused request should provide the person's legal name, date of birth, SCDC ID, sentencing county, and an approximate release interval. Ask for the release or discharge date, the release type, and the eligible public sentence fields needed to resolve the question.

SCDC policy separates public inmate information from medical, security, victim, and other protected material. A request does not assure release of every field. Give enough identity detail to avoid a same-name mismatch, but do not ask for unrelated protected records.

Lexington Sentences Across SCDC

The SCDC Institutions directory does not list a current state prison in Lexington County. Historical references to Lexington County Prison Camp or Lexington Correctional Center do not make either one a current release contact. The statewide system is the useful route for a person convicted in Lexington and assigned elsewhere.

That distinction prevents a common error. Selecting Lexington in the Released Inmate Search means Lexington is tied to the state record. It does not mean the individual was booked or released at Lexington County Detention Center. A county detainee who was never sentenced to SCDC may never appear in either SCDC tool.

Note: Institution assignment can change during a sentence, while the statewide SCDC ID remains the stronger key for matching a release result.

SCDC Release Fields Explained

The released list is built around an event and date range. A verified Lexington search can return the fields below. Hidden or exported values may add a SID, victim indicator, detainer indicator, or most serious offense. Those fields require context and should not replace the visible release event.

Administrative labels observed in the source include RELEASED, RELEASE, PROBATION, and SUPV RE-ENTRY. Preserve that wording. The field is evidence of what SCDC recorded, and a supervised release calls for a second check through the community-supervision agency.

Projected Versus Actual Release

A current SCDC detail can show PROJECTED RELEASE DATE, PROJECTED PAROLE ELIGIBILITY, and SUP. REENTRY ELIGIBILITY. These are present-sentence planning fields. They depend on sentence sheets, jail credit, mandatory service floors, credit assumptions, disciplinary losses, and the relationship among concurrent or consecutive terms. None is an observed gate event.

The public release-date calculator uses the different labels Earliest Possible Parole Eligibility Date and Earliest Possible Release Date. It assumes maximum qualifying credits and says its results are not official. It cannot supply an authoritative calculation for an already sentenced person and does not resolve prior convictions, later convictions, or Youthful Offender Act cases.

Use a projected field for planning. Use the Released Inmate Search for actual prison departure. For a dispute about an individual calculation, contact Inmate Records rather than adding the sentence length to an admission date.

SCDC Public Release Records

South Carolina FOIA, Title 30 Chapter 4, generally permits inspection or copying of nonexempt public records. A written request normally receives an availability decision within ten business days, excluding weekends and legal holidays. The decision period is twenty business days when records are more than 24 months old. If access is granted, production is generally due within 30 calendar days after the decision or required deposit, or 35 days for older material.

Reasonable search, retrieval, redaction, and reproduction fees may apply. Public access does not extend to every item in an inmate file. Medical, security, victim, and other protected information can be withheld or redacted. Identify the release record narrowly by legal name, SCDC ID, date of birth, sentencing county, and approximate release interval. Ask for the actual release or discharge date and release type rather than a broad copy of all prison records.

SCDC Time Credit Boundaries

South Carolina Code Title 24 Chapter 13 sets different credit rules for different state sentences. Section 24-13-150 places an 85 percent service floor on qualifying no-parole offenses. Good-conduct, work, or education credit cannot reduce those sentences below that mandatory floor. For eligible SCDC prisoners outside that category, Section 24-13-210 authorizes good-conduct deductions subject to behavior, eligibility, and forfeiture. Section 24-13-230 supplies a separate framework for earned work and education credit.

Credits do not create a fixed promise. A disciplinary loss, corrected sentence sheet, verified jail credit, revocation order, added conviction, or concurrent-versus-consecutive ruling can alter the controlling date. SCDC policy states that a posted disciplinary good-time loss updates the projected release date on the next day. Mandatory minimums and the 85 percent floor override a lower estimate.

Local detention sentences follow a different rule. Section 24-13-210(C) addresses good-conduct credit for a person sentenced to a local detention facility or county public works. It does not turn a Lexington pretrial detainee into an SCDC prisoner, and it does not create a public SCDC projected-date field. LCSD and the sentencing court must confirm a local calculation.

Supervision After SCDC Release

The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services is separate from SCDC. SCDC operates prisons and records the prison departure. SCDPPPS supervises probation, parole, supervised reentry, community supervision, and related statuses after or apart from incarceration.

Use the SCDPPPS Offender Search with a valid name, SID, county, or birth-year combination. Its public results represent the prior day, and a person who has completed supervision may not appear. Parole

Board-authorized service of the rest of a prison term in the community under conditions.

Probation

Court-ordered community supervision that may be imposed instead of or after a suspended term.

Supervised reentry

A structured move from prison into supervised community status before the projected sentence end.

Discharge

The end of the applicable custody or supervision obligation, based on the governing record.

Federal and County Boundaries

SCDC does not replace Lexington County, federal, or immigration records. A person moved from Lexington County Detention Center into SCDC remains in custody even though the county roster may no longer show the name. The SCDC current locator should then replace the jail roster as the main custody source. Later, the state release list records an actual prison departure.

A federal prisoner belongs in the BOP locator or USMS custody chain. An immigration transfer belongs in ICE custody. A county detainee released on bond belongs in LCSD and court records, not the state-prison release list. Match the authority at each step: county booking, state transport, state release, community supervision, or federal transfer.

Note: A missing name is system-specific evidence, so confirm the receiving or releasing authority before describing the person as free from custody.
